Doubt kills our passion.
Our passion to write. Our passion to excel. Our passion to create.
It’s suffocating. Devastating.
Life is short. Doubt makes it shorter. And yet, paradoxically, doubt can make life seem agonizingly longer.
As a writer, you deserve to be the best you can be. You deserve to write your heart out and scribble the words that matter to you, to write the stories you yearn to write.
Doubt doesn’t need to define your writing future. It’s true. Writer’s Doubt need not be the end all be all. Doubt will always exist within you, within me, within all of us. However, it can (and must) be understood, put in check, and triumphed over.
How could a drop-out write an iconic book about writing and doubt and coin a phrase with the publication of said book, Writer’s Doubt?
The author should have doubted himself so immensely that it would’ve been impossible.
Doubt’s duty-bound grammar police should have instilled enough fears and doubts in him to squash such foolish dreams of grandeur.
And, well, yes, doubt did just that. To me.
Until it didn’t. That’s what I want to share with you. I want to teach you how you can do it, too. Overcome doubt’s oppressive influence and break free from fear’s iron grip.
Super-not-so-secret:
The grammar police have more fears and doubts about their abilities than all others. All of us nitpickers do. The mirror is unforgiving.
Don’t be a nitpicker of other peoples’ unforced errors – we all have more than enough faults of our own. Don’t we? Nitpicking and hairsplitting is a product of doubt, because the more flaws we see in ourselves, the more flaws doubt makes us look for in others, and boys and girls, when we find them in abundance we know we’re riddled with doubt.
So, don’t.
Always choose the side of grace. Even if you feel you absolutely must say something critical, be kind. Doubt will sulk away when you use grace and kindness as your guide. Being helpful is a far cry from being purposely critical.
Super-secret, secret:
The truth is, when you’re in control of doubt, it can become a catalyst for the desire to create and excel. Doubt can drive you to greater heights. It can light a fire under your ass.
Doubt challenges you. It dares you.
What this means is, when you decide to fight it, to deal it the harshest blows, you must strive to give your all, do your best, and ultimately, create work that matters to you.
Doubt is only the enemy of those who give in to it – and let’s face it, we ALL have given in to it at one point or another, for longer and shorter periods of time.
It’s time to take control of your destiny and deny fear and doubt the control they do not deserve.
3 times a year I open the doors of my course Writers Crushing Doubt. If you sincerely want to put doubt and fear in their place and take control of your writing and creative destiny, this is a course you want to consider. It’s based on my bestselling book “Writer’s Doubt” and takes you on an internal exploration of your creative desires, your greatest fears and you’re most confounding doubts.
It’s not for the faint of heart. It is for those who are sincere about overcoming the very real challenges doubt places within us. It’s for those who want to accomplish their goals. It’s for those who want to do more than wish upon a star. It’s for those who have had enough with waiting for the right time. It’s for you.
Writer’s Crushing Doubt is an investment. It’s an investment in your writing and creative future. It’s an investment in yourself.
As with anything with the potential to challenge your doubts, doubt itself can talk you out of taking any positive steps forward towards overcoming it. This is the reason doubt is so damn difficult to deal with. It’s the reason doubt is the number one enemy of writing, and really, all creative aspirations.
Self-doubt is a son-of-a-gun. And you’ll never completely be rid of it. The good news is you don’t need to be rid of it. All you have to do, every day, is take one step in defiance, in rebellion, in open contest to the resistance within you.
If you’re ready, join us in Writer’s Crushing Doubt. Use the lessons to find the path which has worked for so many already.
If you’re not ready, that’s perfectly okay. But know this, the day will come when doubt will not control you, when it will not stop you, when it will be forced to give in to your genius – if you commit to acknowledging it does exists and it does have power and then fight it with all the creative power you possess.
Because doubt works in the shadows. Cast the light of recognition on it. Doubt works by making us believe we’re not really any good at, well, anything that matters to us, and we’ll certainly never be good enough to fulfill our dreams, hopes and desires.
Don’t believe it.
You. Are. Good enough.
Fight the good fight.
What is Writer’s Crushing Doubt?
- It’s the one course that looks at writing from a writer and creative’s personal perspective and discusses the issues most writers, in fact, most people experience in the real world.
- It asks the hard questions. Answers are not required. It’s about provoking positive and productive solution thinking, which we all know doubt hinders.
- It teaches a way of writing each and every day that can work for every writer at every level, no matter how much they believe in their abilities or not.
- Learn the processes which will build confidence in you immediately, now!
- Start writing and creating the work you’ve always dreamed of and stop waiting for some mythical day in the future to get started (or to finish).
For 20 years I wanted to become a writer, but I didn’t think I had what it takes. I didn’t believe I could actually sit down and stick with it. I didn’t believe I had the courage and discipline to be the writer I always dreamed of becoming. I was riddled with doubt. I gave up.
It took a lot of work, a lot of hard lessons learned, and life changing revelations to get me back in the chair and back to writing.
I first wrote my bestselling memoir about my childhood growing up with undiagnosed ADD, then I built on that success and wrote several more books, and when I realized I could help others with what I’ve experienced and learned writing, publishing and overcoming my doubts and fears, I wrote Writer’s Doubt and eventually created the Writer’s Crushing Doubt online course.
Sometimes, the most powerful thing you can do is take the first step, join us in Writer’s Crushing Doubt. The course is learn-at-your-own-pace, so there’s absolutely no pressure. The course helps you find your path, not mine and not anyone else’s – your path – the only way that matters for you.
We all have to find our own paths to become the writers, creatives, and artists we want to be.
Whether you join us or not, now or later, remember:
You are good enough.
It’s about making that reality stick and bringing your dreams to fruition.
