Yes, No, or Maybe? How a Business Plan Can Help the Indecisive Writer

Her website, Writers Helping Writers, is a hub for all things description, offering tons of free resources to aid writers in their literary efforts. Her new online reference and brainstorming library, One Stop For Writers, will be available October 7th. ~

If I could pick one word to describe how my writing career has turned out, it would probably be unexpected. I started in 2004, composing YA fiction. That was all I ever wanted to write. But when an opportunity arose in 2008 to start a blog with my critique partner and writing soul sister Angela Ackerman, I took the chance. It was the right choice, even though a big chunk of my writing time had to then be devoted to nonfiction, since this would be the focus of our blog.

By 2011, our audience had exploded and they were clamoring for a published version of our content; in a very short period of time, I found myself a published nonfiction author. Four years and three books later, I’m not only a nonfiction author but also a speaker and writing coach—a happy change, but a far cry from where I once envisioned myself as a writer.

Writer's Business Plan.

As writers, we often expect our inner muse to produce on demand. Sometimes it works and sometimes…you know…it starts with feeling a little blocked, turns into dread, you pass by your desk feeling guilty, and then you let the papers pile on your desk to completely avoid writing.

Nature is a powerful writing stimulant.

Note: This is a guest post by Natasa Lekic, she is the founder of NY Book Editors, which connects independent authors to highly experienced editors. She’s a big fan of what authors manage to do when they believe in themselves.

The question every writer with an early draft wants to ask editors and literary agents is, “Should I keep writing?” They want to know if it’s any good, otherwise they’ll quit wasting their time. It sounds like a reasonable inquiry…

Let’s admit it: We’re all a little bit scared of the writing and publishing process. Especially if we’ve never done it before. We feel it as we stare at the blank page, or as we hit the send button on that first e-mail to an agent or publisher, or as we wait for the first review to pop up on Amazon.

It’s okay to admit that. Because we all feel it. And we’re not alone.

Have no fear of writing.
